Robert Smith was a radio host, actor, and voice actor whose roles include Kaijinbo in InuYasha and Genma Saotome in Ranma ½. He died on June 1, 2010 due to pancreatic cancer and liver cancer. The "O" in his name was to distinguish him from other Robert Smiths, and does not represent anything.
